Luck of the Irish

You’ll often hear our founder Steph talk about being from Seattle and the pride she feels at calling the Emerald City home. But even further back in her history, there lies a deep connection to the true Emerald Isle: she is descended from the Gilmore family of County Down.

Irish music, dance, and food abound in the Pacific Northwest–there’s even an Irish theater company in Portland! (Check out Corrib Theater‘s current season lineup if you’re in the Rose City.)

But by far the most influential pillar of Irish heritage for Steph was the sports. Over the course of 10 years she played gaelic football, camogie, and hurling–and fell in love with all three. In eight years as a hurler, she met wonderful people, drank some delicious whiskey, taught incarcerated youth how to play this brutal and beautiful sport. . .and managed to keep the Willamette Hurling Club stuck together with duct tape for a few years past what anyone thought was possible.

Hurling gave birth to much of Superheroine Solutions because it gave Steph confidence, pushed her beyond her comfort zone, and brought community connections into her life that are still resonating today.

So this St. Patrick’s Day, while you’re sporting green and keeping your ears peeled for tin whistles, honor Superheroine Solutions by clicking below and giving one of the most effective hurling recruitment tools out there a gander.

Who knows? You may find that a little luck sticks by your side.
