Yesterday we were in a situation where the conversation lulled quite a bit–two financial professionals were helping us set up an account, and between us there wasn’t much chit-chat.

Thus at one point our founder Steph piped up and inserted into the silence, “So who’s your favorite superhero?”

“Ohh, that’s too hard,” replied one of the professionals. “I feel like I don’t know that many superheroes.”

“Well,” Steph replied, “it doesn’t have to be a famous superhero. It could be someone from your family that you admire, for example.”

The person thought a moment, and said, “Then it’s definitely my mom. She is a STRONG WOMAN.”

With the advents of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe, it’s sometimes very easy to forget that some of the strongest people we know don’t wear capes, sport masks, or brandish shields and hammers. Sometimes the inspiration we need is waiting at the other end of a phone call to a family member. Or in the doctor who got COVID three times and yet continues to care for her patients. Or maybe it’s at the YMCA, where just the other day a child truly terrified of the water still jumped in to resume their swim lesson.

What’s also important to remember is that YOU are likely someone else’s superhero. We spend so much time dwelling on our failures and shortcomings that we often don’t see ourselves through the approving eyes of others. Pretend for a second that you’re Captain Marvel and meeting Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel for the first time. You’re Kamala’s HERO. Her role model. What kind words would Kamala say to you? And would you take that praise to heart?

So. Let’s ask the question again, but with a bit of a spin: who’s your favorite superhero today?

It’s okay if the answer is you.
